English w/Kovach > Week 8

Happy Friday, Roadrunners!

We have one week left before Fall break and I am pushing these students to do their absolute best before going into break. We have seen a lot of vandalism on campus this week, so please remind your students to take pride in their campus, and to speak up if they see something.

Please see below for what we did this week:

English IV: We discussed the Graphic Novel version of Beowulf and chatted about what makes a hero, a hero. We looked at the Anglo-Saxon culture and World View. We rounded out the week by discussing “Lof” (or fame) and the Epic Hero Cycle. It was a packed week.

English III: Early America and Colonialism took center stage this week and we learned a great deal about the landing at Plymouth Rock that most students were unaware of. We then read an account of a settlers journey to Plymouth and the trials and tribulations they underwent.

English AP Literature: We wrapped up our discussion on Setting and moved on to Plot. We read two different short stories and applied all of this week’s new knowledge to what we had just read. It is just amazing listening to their conversations and seeing all their hard work come to fruition. We finished the week with our usual vocabulary quiz and 95% of the class received 15/15! It was a great week.

English I- Honors: We finished our discussion of “The Necklace” and moved right into our next unit on Animal Farm. The Russian Revolution and George Orwell took center stage as we learned background information before diving into our book. We are already a few chapters in and have our first homework of the unit. So far they seem to be enjoying the text. It is one of my favorite novels, so I hope they enjoy it as much as I do.
