English w/ Kovach > Week 24

 In English III, English IV

Happy Friday, Roadrunners!

This was a busy week with ASVAB testing and the District Spelling Bee and we still managed to get a lot accomplished. I do want to say right off the bat that many students are taking a very complacent and overly relaxed approach to their classes this semester. This is not the best way to start off the 2nd semester and I’m hoping we can get back on track. Please remind your students, especially those online, that they need to hold themselves because I can only do so much through a computer screen. Assignments are due on specific days and if they are late, it is going to be graded late and points will be taken off. On that note, if a student does not turn in an assignment by 4pm on Friday, it will not be graded until the following week. I know this is a difficult time, but I also know that these kids are a lot smarter than they are showing me and themselves. Please see below for what we worked on this week.

English IV > We recapped the first half the Romeo and Juliet and focused in on one specific character. Students were able to take a more creative approach to their main assignment this week. Next week I am hoping to finish the play.

English III > We continued to read and analyze sources on the pros and cons of cellphones. Next week we will begin drafting our essays.

English II-Honors > We made it through the trial of Tom Robinson and are now discussing the aftermath of the Guilty verdict. Over the weekend, students need to read Ch. 24-26 and be ready for a quiz on Monday.

English AP/DE > We discussed the difficulty in providing evidence for an impromptu essay when they have no access to sources. I am really hoping this discussion will help them in many ways over the next few years. We also put the finishing touches on their “Family Matters” essay and I look forward to reading them over the weekend. This essay was a struggle because the word limit was 750 and they could not incorporate any outside sources.

Reminder that next week, January 27th, is a half day (A day). It is essential that students come in on those days as teaching and learning don’t ever get put on pause.

I hope you all have an amazing weekend. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Best, Ms. Kovach
